Personal Coaching for Performance Improvement
Acorn’s coaching approach is to create a professional relationship where our coach works collaboratively with the client towards their achievement of business and personal objectives. The dialogue is based on trust, respect and the belief in a person’s ability to change.
Change, whether technological, social, political or competitive, is dynamic. Organisations need to respond and adapt to shifting business situations, and successful change, whether reactive or proactive, means people need to do things differently.
The key focus in our coaching interventions is the attainment of individual and organisational outcomes. Our method embraces contrasting philosophies, moving between non-directive questioning to raise awareness, and a directive approach in which the coach brings their experience and opinion to the relationship. Acorn coaches are skilled at moving between those different approaches as the need requires whilst remaining true to the principles of coaching.
Critical to success is the ability to maintain responsibility to the organisation whilst holding client confidentiality.
Why do I need it?
Coaching for Excellence
To enable high-performing, high-potential individuals to clarify their goals and accelerate their performance, often to ‘step-up’ to a more senior managerial position and to be effective as quickly as possible.
To help people where there is a perceived shortfall in capability. The client may be experiencing specific performance issues or facing new challenges.
To enable individuals to acquire and embed specific skills. Coaching usually takes the form of observation followed by feedback
Developing Internal Coaches or the Leader as Coach
To build the skills and confidence to develop the capability of others, whether for specific skills or to ensure the continuity of the succession pipeline.
Coaching the Leadership Journey
To ensure leaders are effective as quickly as possible by managing their leadership transitions ahead of, rather than after, the event. Marshall Goldsmith, the world’s leading leadership thinker, believes leaders reduce their effectiveness because they believe the habits that ‘got me here, will get me there’. Charan et al lay out the journey as a series of stages through which the leader must transition. Each leadership step up requires new mind-sets and habits.
Acorn’s Leadership coaching approach recognises and utilises Charan’s Leadership Journey and Marshall Goldsmith’s insights, working with, testing and questioning the beliefs that help and hinder the leader’s effective progression.

Coaching in Action
One-to-one coaching can be conducted in the work place, off site or by telephone. Acorn is experienced in the benefits and consequences of each approach and can advise as to the most effective approach for your organisation.
Triumvirate Coaching draws on the skills, experience, insight and support of a third stakeholder. From the outset a mentor, line manager or other stakeholder is involved in establishing and monitoring the focus and output of the coaching.
This method is particularly beneficial in accelerating the performance of those who have recently taken on additional or more senior responsibilities, or who are experiencing a performance difficulty with a particular issue.
Acorn delivers effective coach training programmes to help build an organisation’s internal coaching capability.
